International Workshop on Strengthening the Role of Local Authorities to Build Disaster Resilient Communities
Project background
The local authorities
have a vital role in dealing with DRR because the
impact of all disasters is local. So it is important to define and strengthen
the role of the local authority to build disaster resilient communities. It is
also emphasized that local governments need to get ready, reduce the
risks and become resilient to disasters through the Making Cities Resilient
Campaign of UNISDR. There are five cities (Antalya, Kocaeli, Yalova, Gaziantep
and ?stanbul) within the campaign in Turkey. So, it is aimed at gathering the
representatives of municipalities and provincial directorates of Ministries to share best practices, to discuss key issues such as urban
risk, city planning, education and awareness for building resilient communities
by organizing a workshop. It is also planned to invite a representative from
UNISDR and also from other countries to share their best practices.
