Inform and involve the population in the prevention of seismic and tsunami risks: minimise damage and increase the resilience of cities

 
 
 

Project background

The main objective of the project is to increase the resilience of the population in relation to seismic and tsunami risks and to improve the collective response to a crisis situation, proposing and carrying out actions that contribute to the dissemination of information and procedures.

Most significant achievements

European Centre on Urban Risks - Portugal :
  • Collaboration with Municipal Civil Protection authorities (mainly from Lisbon and Cascais)

  • Seminar on “Involve the public in reducing the risks: alert, awareness and measures to minimize the risks. Situation of disabled and / or handicapped persons. Application: tsunami risk” in Setubal

  • Seminar on “Involve people in risk reduction” in Lagos and Tangier

  • Publication of 2 leaflets for Lagos on seismic and tsunami risk (including safety measures and post-event measures), both in Portuguese and English

  • Improvement of the CERU webpage in order to better inform the public on measures to minimise risks and increase the resilience of the population

  • Study on the social vulnerability of Lagos with the support of CERU and the collaboration of the Lagos Municipality

  • Organisation of a seminar in Portugal to launch the project and establish results and principles for action: involvement of the authorities (in particular the municipal civil protection of the coastal towns between Cascais and Setubal), associations and companies

  • Organisation of a working meeting in the south of Portugal (Lagos) with the municipal civil protection officers of the Algarve coastal municipalities and the participation of local associations and companies, to establish results and principles for action

  • Benchmarking of existing dissemination material and identification of actions to be undertaken to minimise the risk of the most vulnerable groups

  • Studies on social vulnerability and risk mapping in Cascais and Lagos

  • Organisation and participation in several information and awareness activities in Lagos and Cascais Councils / Organisation of a travelling exhibition to inform the public on safety measures and procedures to follow in case of earthquake and/or tsunami occurrence

  • Preparation of informative materials to place in the beaches, evacuation routes and areas of concentration of population / Implementation in a pilot beach in Lagos / Design of evacuation routes for Cascais / Development and test of a questionnaire devoted to the hotels on tsunami awareness

  • Study of the Social vulnerability of Lagos and evaluation of criticality and supportability for integrated risk analysis

  • Organisation of an intermediate seminar to present the progress of the project
