Vulnerability assessment of the historical center of Lefkas

Period2018
Partners
Coordinator centre : European Centre on Prevention and Forecasting of Earthquakes

Project background

The scope of this activity is the development and the evaluation of a seismic vulnerability assessment model for the old town of Lefkas, capital of Lefkas Island, Greece. Lefkas is part of the Ionian Islands, a most seismically active area in Greece that has suffered numerous destructive earthquakes. Most of the buildings of the historical center of the town were built by local practices and have been designated as representative earthquake resistant constructions by the European Council Cultural Heritage Unit. A Seismic Vulnerability Assessment model will be developed based on the international literature for various seismic scenarios.
Expected results

Expected results year 1

European Centre on Prevention and Forecasting of Earthquakes - Greece :
- The protection of human lives(of the neighbours, curators, visitors or even inhabitants of the historical center)
- The protection of the Historical center from future Earthquakes
- saving money, as the cost for damage restoration not say for human lives, is much more than that for prevention
- The implementation of this methodology to other Historical Centers with similar characteristics

Deliverables year 1

The Methodology for the estimation of the vulnerability of the historical center of Lefkas will be delivered, in Greek and in English.

Activities year 1

For the implementation of this Activity, a Scientific Committee will be nominated with main tasks:
The review of the existing bibliography, the estimation of the vulnerability taking into account the EMS-98, the implementation of the methodology for different seismic damage scenarios and thus its validation. For the evaluation of the above methodology, the results for the estimated lesions will be compared with real recordings of previous earthquake damage.

Geoscientists, Civil Engineers, Architects and Stakeholders
