Nuclear Hazard. Chernobyl and Fukushima: Lessons for Public Awareness

Project background

In many countries nuclear technology is seen as one of the increasingly important solutions for meeting rising energy demands, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating climate change, counterbalancing fluctuating prices of fossil energy sources. At the same time lessons learned from the Chernobyl accident should be carefully taken into account.

This project is based on previous work carried out by TESEC and its partner centres. Its global objective was to improve public awareness on nuclear and technological hazards. In 2011, the primary text of the booklet "Basic Knowledge of Nuclear Hazards: Lessons from Chernobyl and Fukushima" has been prepared in English and discussed during international meetings, seminars and workshops. TESEC also contribute to the organisation of the International Conference "Twenty-Five Years after Chernobyl Accident: Safety for the Future " which took place in Kiev in April 2011. The main objective of this international conference was to discuss on how to use Chernobyl lessons for the safety of nuclear power and other hazardous technologies to protect people and the environment from emergency.

In 2012-2013, the activities carried out in the framework of the project included the translation of the booklet in 12 languages, the dissemination of its content as well as its promotion through training courses.
